If you’re only alive when you smile
What a short life that would be.
For us fools alive today,
Would your life be a year? 2? Possibly 3?

Kolya as he was known to family,
For friends he was hilarious Nick.
Nykolai we know you’re flying high,
Your smile would have made any name stick.

It’s been days since you left us all here,
Adrift, so sad, were lost without your cheer.
Your parents more than family to me you know,
That fateful day a blur – wherever did you go?

As your cousin I’m sure I didn’t impress,
And I sit here with a guilty heart amidst this mess,
Praying you know I expected a lifetime to know you,
Hoping you remember those memories from the past few years when I was with you.

All I can say is you brought more joy to your mom and dad
Than most parents know in a lifetime with the children they’ve had.
You blasted into their life, their son, their shooting star
And though you’re gone, these few days I’ve felt you, and know you’re not far.

Maybe that’s the reason I cant leave them, the farm, or even Gita,
I’m eager to stay with you, keep you alive, eager just to see ya.
But in being here, at your home, I’ve realized something today
Your life may have been here, but inside us is where you’ll stay.

So rest easy dear boy, know you’re missed dearly and loved,
We feel your warmth and your smile shining down every moment from above.
